Overview:
“Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.” – Phaedrus
Literature is a beautiful art packed with meaning and excitement. It’s also a mystery to many, full of hidden messages and lessons. This one-day workshop will focus on identifying and analyzing literary devices beyond superficial understanding. The goal is to gain new insights and tools to help extract meaning and depth from the words on a page. Some of the areas of focus will include: narrative point of view; interpreting the meaning of an allusion and its source; interpreting and classifying figures of speech. Other devices to be discussed in light of rhetorical analysis include: anaphora, antithesis, apostrophe, assonance, chiasmus, and understatement.
