Conic Sections
Recommended For:
AP® Mathematics Teachers
(Grades 10-12)
Time:
6 hours (1 Day Workshop)
Overview:
Let’s get into the curves! Students often struggle applying mathematics to complex, real life intersections like conic functions. While our learners continue to matriculate, let’s help them understand the applications and give them the best instruction to help them succeed. This one-day workshop will provide teachers with the skills for their students to understand the basics of conic sections along with complex ideas like identifying the types of conic sections and more.
Learning Objectives:
● Focus on the quadratic equation of the form ax² + by² + cx + dy + e = 0,
● Explore techniques to apply the method for completing the square to put the equation into standard form,
● We’ll give you tips to help students identify whether the graph of the equation is a circle, ellipse, parabola, or hyperbola, and how to graph the equation, and
● Participants will also obtain new skills on teaching the parametric and Cartesian equations, analytic geometry and the application of the conic sections.
